Raising the Hardy Boys

Have you ever told a joke in front of a room full of people and had it completely fall flat?

Well, that's kind of how the night started out for me at the Candidate's forum. Sam fell asleep at 6:29, Loretta and I met at 6:32 and we walked over to the church for the forum. All I knew for sure was that I didn't want to sit on either edge because that would mean having to speak first.

Guess what? I got to go first. Stupid coin toss.

So the moderator, who'd just been introduced as Joe, started the night by saying:

"Hello. I'm filling in for Katie Couric this evening." When he turned to me with the first question, I said, "Can I call you Joe?"* I thought it was so funny I even laughed. But nobody else did. In fact worse than the not laughing was the Nothingness that followed. Just blank stares.

So that wasn't the best beginning but I was really pleased with how things went from there. I guess there is something to be said for getting your first big blunder out of the way.

*This is the opening line Sarah Palin used during the V.P. debates.

I would have laughed outloud! In fact I did, just now at my desk.
